Nigeria
Nigeria as hosts
were accompanied by the hysterical reflection of their success in crowds
and media. After a disappointing 0:0 draw against Congo in their second
group match, the team had to wait through a scare in their cabin as a riot
broke out among angry supporters.
The same supporters emphatically
stormed the field after an imaginary Golden Goal in quarter-finals.
In the end the Nigerians
had gone stronger by each game and the Nigerian stars had been able to
add some bright highlights to the tournament with their actions and spectacular
goals.
But the team had to accept
as well that a hard working outfit of Senegal was strong enough to have
them on the verge of a quarter final defeat and that the eventual champions,
Cameroons indomitable Lions, were just to strong to cage in.
The fact that Nigerians
later complained about the penalty in the shoot out which seemed to have
crossed the line, but was ruled no goal, was not the best sample of good
sportsmanship. Cameroon had looked stronger in the final and defeated a
home team who had had all momentum on their side before the match and once
more after having equalised the Cameroonian two goal lead.
And when Sunday Oliseh pointed
the finger on African refereeing he was wrong: At the Euro 1996 there had
been a similar, even more clear goal not given for Bulgaria, barring them
a possible go through into the quarter finals. That one then by far easier
to see. |
