Group A produced the new
African Champions Cameroon and with Ghana a team that went out in the quarter-finals.
Before the tournament,
Group A had been labelled as one of the two so-called 'groups of death'.
It contained four
quite closely neighboured Western African teams. Of those four three could
be counted as at least among the top ten of the continent: Ghana, Cameroon
, and Côte d'Ivoire. And with Ghana one of them has been the hosts.
The fourth has been Togo, complete outsiders. In the end all teams ended
with four points, and Togo had been spoilers of the Ivorian campaign. Cameroon
and Ghana went into the last match with a 3 point lead. While Togo did
not really come close against Cameroon, though winning 1:0, Ghana almost
were eliminated by Côte d'Ivoire.
