African Champions League explained

The initial draw had been made for all knock-out rounds in advance.
So it has led to a scheme in which the winners of the first round already know their possible opponents in the second round.

It is unknow which effect seeding has had on the draw but it has lead to some quite unbalanced 'quartets'. While the Nigerian, Egyptian, and Tunisian champions seem to face relatively easy tasks it can be called a very difficult draw especially for Ivorian champions ASEC and as well for title holders Hearts Of Oak from Accra, Ghana.
In the same time one of the long time absentees, either Algerian, Zambian, Sudanese, or Libyan champions will get a place in the league.

So the determination of the 8 group finalists can be shown in the following scheme:

African Champions League 1st round 1st leg matches
While Julius Beger of Nigeria did their homework against the champions of tiny Equatorial Guinea Sony Ela Nguema, winning 5:0, some narrow results are surprising: Espérance Tunis, one of Africas dominationg clubs for years could only beat JS Ténére of Niger (not Nigeria) by one goal and now will have to concentrate in the return match. Respectable results also on a lower level for outsoders when Burundi and Sechelles champions achieved promising results at Uganda and Reunion.
Al Ahly Cairo also did the necessary in beating Eritrea's Red Sea 3:0 while on Sunday South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns had a disappointing 0:0 draw with the Mozambique champions Costa do Sol.
Two matches have been postponed for a week because the involvement of players in the African Under 20 Championship: Hearts Of Oak (Ghana) - Étoile du Congo (Congo) and St. George (Ethiopia) - Tusker (Kenya)
