GROUP 3, week
3:
Jan 13 2001, 1720 GMT Tunisia
- Morocco 0:1 (final)
before: after Morocco
losing at Gabon, the group looks as it would not be decided early. Morocco
fired Henry Kasperczak quickly and replaced him by Humberto Cuelho who
had been the coach for Portugal at Euro 2000. In an earlier game today
Kenya might have helped the two giants by beating Gabon while claiming
own ambitions with a new coach. So Morocco and Tunisia still are favorites
to advance. Anyway it is a prestigeous match and a qualification is not
guarantueeed, especially for Morocco who are under pressure to form a successful
unit in front of the World Cup qualifiers.
Th match is a rematch of
last years Nations Cup group match which ended 0:0
1st half:
- Tunisia in white, Morocco
in green
- ('20) The match has some
tempo but few goal scenes as the teams neutralize each other. Tunisia do
not find their usual domination at home matches, it is a quite balanced
affair.
- ('30) During the last
minutes Tunisia have gained some momentum and come closer to threaten the
goal
- ('44) no big opportunities
until an error opens up a huge opportunity for Tunisia - Sellimi scores,
but a very close offside call denies the goal
halftime 0:0
TV7 stats: ball possession
54:46, corners 2:0, offsides 7:5, shots 2:1, free kicks 14:14
2nd half:
-('50) a long ball into
attack and a mismatch in marking sets a player free on the left hand side,
the low cross gets converted by Camacho (Hadda) easily - 0:1
-('53) at least one fan
has achieved to pass by the security and to invade the pitch and is brought
down by a Morocco player, the match continues after 2 minutes
-('60) Tunisia: dangerous
free kick - a position from right hand side and a surprise low shot on
goal hits the outside of the net
-('64) great slalom by Tunisian
#5, he has moved out the defence but then fires from 10 meters across the
bar with most of the the goal wide open
-('67) the match has become
much more exciting now with more half chances on both sides. Tunisians
pressure and Morocco with counter attacks
-('68) one of those counter
attempts finally sees #10 Adel Ramzi in good position with only facing
the keeper. His direct shot from 18 meters passes El Ouaer but rolls wide
-(72) Tunisian #13 volleys
a Baya cross on goal and misses by half a meter
-all further attempts by
Tunisia too nervous, Morocco defends the scoreline without being able to
run a deciding counter attack either
final score: 0:1
An unexpected turn in this
group and a valuable three points for Morocco. The teams were quite equally
strong but Tunisia had the bad luck that their goal was nullyfied by a
very close offside call. The Egyptian referee seems to have done a very
good job in calming down the players in this always hot rivalry.
