Jun 15 0630 GMT ROUND LAST 16  Germany - Paraguay 1:0
A classical World Cup match, like written in a screenplay and a stunning copy of the German win over Morocco 1986 when they reached the final.
Germany had been one of only two teams (with Poland) to having had the privilege of three first round matches started at 20.30 h at night.
This was the only afternoon match in their schedule and the change showed.
Paraguay was weakened early by the loss of star striker Roque Santa Cruz due to what seemed a muscle injury, ironically player for Bayern Munich. But the South Americans 'hijacked' the match during the course of the first half when their style of play and the heat weakened the German will to put power pressure on them.
Towards the end of the half some logical chances were the consequence, the biggest wasted by defender Ayala who appeared unmarked in front of Kahn but tried to fire directly and did not hit the ball properly.
The Germans refocussed at half-time and began to fight their way back into the match. Towards the end of the match it became clear Germany would win, as the sole goal of Paraguay seemed to escape into extra time (and then probably into penalty shoot-out) and the Germans realised their chance, winning more and more challenges and shifting the match more and more into the half of the South Americans.
The goal came late but was logical when Schneider set up Neuville for a successful Leverkusen connection to win it.
It was only now that Maldini brought on Cuevas who immediately changed the picture, but with only seconds to play, too late. Cuevas had been reported to have been injured before the match. If he had been fit, it was a Maldini error not to bring him earlier when it became evident that the match turned in favour of the Germans. With no ball approaching the German goal, the winner could only be the Europeans.

Jun 15 1130 GMT ROUND LAST 16  Danmark - England 0:3
There are those matches where everything goes wrong early...
Danmark profited from such a match 4 years ago when defeating Nigeria and now paid the opposite price.
An unforced own goal by keeper Sorensen not only provided the 5th minute lead but in the same scene alsothe best Danish defender Helveg was injured and had to be replaced.
A clear confidence shift towards England was the consequence and England scored 2 more at crucial moments profiting from more mistakes in the Danish defence.
In the heavy rain Danmark were superior in possession, created some goal scenes but were not able to force goals against the strong English defence that had only allowed one goal so far.
England continued their Liverpool style, a rather defensive approach with a concrete wall in front of their own goal and a few dangerous strikers entertaining upfront and this was enough to carry away the match today against unlucky Danes who had expected much more after the great first round.

Jun 16 0630 GMT ROUND LAST 16  Sweden - Senegal 1:2 (after Golden Goal extra-time)

Before:
Senegal without the banned Fadiga and Diao but with Coly and  Cissé

1st half:
-Sweden in command right from the start and two good situations for Senegalese keeper Sylva in the first two minutes
-('3) a big first chance for Sweden as they surprise Senegal with a through pass on a free kick sitation and Sylva makes a great save with his foot against the low shot
-('8) After Sweden has totally dominated the first 7 minutes Senegal penetrate into the Swedish half the first time and are dangerous right away by a through ball on Thiaw whose attempt goes over the bar
-('11) almost inevitable: the first goal after a corner by the unmarked Larsson - 1:0
-Senegal are not present, lose nearly all challenges
-('15) Diouf storms into the penalty area, passes by the second defender and gets hit by his body, falls. What seems a penalty. But the referee says play on.
-'16-'20 Senegal start to wake up and have Sweden drawn back, waiting for counters. Still Sweden are still able to take away ball from the Senegalese defenders when those try to build up the game and so create danger.
-('25) great work by Diouf who gets past a defender makes a diagonal pass and Bouba Diop scores - it is ruled offside by 10 centimeters
-'26-'30 Sweden now completely drawn back and Senegal with one penalty scene after the other, now it looks like Argentina against Sweden, the Skandinavians do exceptionally well in defending crosses, one of the Senegalese strengths
two minutes of amateur playacting:
-('34) Allback tries to copy Tomasson in the way he achieved a penalty against the Senegalese but today it rather looks embarrissing than a penalty
-('35) Diouf tries a dive but does not see yellow
-('37) Henri Camera dances out a defender and fires a low shot from 18 meters through the various legs into the second corner 1:1
-('39) El Hadj Diouf with another of his spectacular dribblings, he gets past two defenders but then fires too quickly
-('41) Senegal break through on the left, aperfect but sharp cross finds Henri Camera, all on his own, but the winger is no centre forward and so his attempted header flies far wide
-('42) another dangerous Swedish free kick, Svensson who scored against Argentina targets the triangle but a great flight by Sylva, he grabs the ball perfectly
-('43) But now Senegal are awake and answer with an attack right away
-('45) Swedish keeper Hedman has a few problems with a distance shot by Bouba Diop
-('46+1) two good looking Senegalese attacks just stopped

halftime 1:1
Sweden put all their energy into the first 15 minutes when Senegal were sleeping (or nervous?). In the course of the half the icture changed dramatically with Senegal entirely dominating the match. Or: with Sweden drawn back like against Argentina, trying to conserve some power. Senegal, who seemed jinxed until the goal (the maybe penalty scene, the offside goal by centimeters), in the end of the half closer to the second goal.
It will be essential for Senegal to be concentrated for all 45+ minutes in the second half this time.

2nd half:
It will be essential for Senegal to be concentrated for all 45+ minutes in the second half this time.
-('46) Sweden need only ten seconds for their first opportunity: a one-two gets them through but Sylva saves the low shot
-('51) Sweden dangerous again but Sylva save the bouncing Allback shot
-the Senegalese defence (always includes midfield players) look helpless when the Swedish attack with several players, maybe the flexibility in the Swedish game surprises the Lions. Sweden back to an attacking approach at the moment.
-('55) Senegal attack but it is difficult to get through the overcrowded penalty area and Sweden who are all in the middle and allow crosses defend those still very well
-('57) on the other side Sweden have too much space and an opportunity wide
-('59) for once Senegal play through the defence (on the ground over the left wing) but the eventual direct attempt by Daf? is far wide
-('65) Senegal have to replace injured defender Malick Diop by Baye, Sweden have brought on striker Andersson for Allback
-('68) great free kick situation for Senegal but Diouf's attempt rather looks like a cross and is comfortably wiped over the bar by Hedman
-('70) Sweden have Senegal running for a minute or more, they do very well in applying pressure at the opportunity
-('71) Sweden play out the Senegal defence quite easily with some short passes but eventually Anderssons attempt is harmless
-('73) first yellow card of the match for Senegalese Coly
-Senegal are not as well positioned on the field like at the end of the first half when they picked up every defended ball and they do not attack with as many players. Nervousness, tiredness, carefulness or just a rhythm variation?
-('75) for once they have an opportunity on a free kick cross when the Swedish defenders miss the ball but a leg is in between and saves the Skandinavians (corner)
-('76) Senegal try to surprise Sweden on the ensuing corner but Colys direct volley from 20 meters gets blocked
-('80) dangerous Swedish counter attack: Ibrahimovic wins the challenge against two defenders and tries from a relatively difficult angle a sharp shot, perfectly saved by the great Sylva
-Senegal look slowed down, they seem overcareful not to lose and they seem a bit tired, losing challenges
-('88) and concentration: Ibrahimovic is unmarked at the second goalpost, but surprised the cross gets through and misses the ball
-('89) typical scen: Senegal are pitched 3 against 6 in attack but no midfield player comes to help
-('90) half chance: Thiaw heads wide a Diouf cross
-('90+1) Sweden still ook sharp on their attacks, but suddenly Senegal have a promising combination, too
-('90+3) two Henri Camera dribblings initialise a late siege of the Swedish penalty area, eventually ended by hedman who plucks down a cross

score after 90 minutes 1:1
the first extra-time (Golden Goal rule applies) of the World Cup 2002 to come

extra-time:
-('91) this times it is Senegal who have a first (though small) goal scene
-('92) an unseen holding by Ibrahomivic is initial point of a very dangerous Swedish attack
-('93) Senegal: Faye from 20 meters across the bar
-('94) Senegal: Thiaw with an embarissing dive and a deserved yellow card
-('95) Sweden: it might have been the most sensational Golden Goal, when Svensson danced out the defenders à la Zidane and immediately fired but the ball clashed against the goalpost
-('98) it has become a thriller: Diouf brakes through on the left into the penalty area but fires wide
-('104) Senegal now have all the luck, when Faye sets up Henri Camera who dribbles past a defender and unleashes a soft but precise shot which rolls against the goalpost and from there just across the line - 1:2

final score: 1:2 a.e.t.
centimers decide in favour of the Senegalese and punish a great Swedish team who have played a perfect match against an exceptional African side.
Senegal now have two more days rest than their quarter final opponents - they will need them after this.

Jun 16 1130 GMT ROUND LAST 16  Spain - Ireland 1:1 a.e.t., pen.: 3:2
One of the best matches of the tournament.
Spain took an early lead through Morientes but it seemed the ideal setup for Ireland to fight their way into the match.
For some time Spain had good counter opportunities and were lucky when Casillas saved a rather undeserved penalty ('63).
Spanish coach Camacho then helped the Irish by taking off striker Morientes which shifted the match even more into the Spanish half. Tough luck when he had to replace Raul because of an injury only 8 minutes later (by another striker, Luque).
Ireland had brought on their 'air monster' Quinn already after 55 minutes and effectively tried with long balls on his head when it was not Damian Duff who relentlessly went at the Spanish defenders with spectacular dribblings.
Such a cross on Quinn provided for the late equaliser ('90) when Hierro helped himself with a desperate holding against the huge attacker. The resulting penalty this time was converted by Robbie Keane and gifted the crowd with 30 minutes more of attacking football.
Spain tumbled like a boxer after a heavy knock and the Irish fighted and attacked but could not decide the match.
In the penalty shoot out all powers seemed to have left the Irish when Casillas could save three of their weak and inaccurate penalties and Spain won though having failed twice themselves.
