World Cup 2002 - African qualification - match report
Tunisia - Madagascar  July 8 1800 GMT
Before the match
Huge first week winners Madagascar will be severely tested here: are they only a threat at home or can they scare the big group favorite a bit?
1st half
Tunisia in white, attacking from the start, Madagascar in green defending
-('3) first test for the Madagascar keeper by a sharp shot from the right corner of the penalty area
-('4)('5) Both with fast counter attacks but no real chances resulting
-('8) Kanzari across the bar from a similar position as 5 minutes before
Madagascar do not look intimidated but lose too many balls in build up and Tunisians begin powerful and fast combinating, applicating various weapons to take apart the opposing defence.
-('11) Kanzari free kick from more than 25 meters distance narrowly across the bar
-('12) another half chance when a Tunisian cross from the left turns towards the goal and almost surprises the keeper
-('13) Madagascar do not hide and look for counter opportunities. The constructions of their few attacking attempts look promising.
-('14) ... but is answered right away by another Tunisian attack with another distnce shot missing the goal close
-('15) Madagascar scores but the referee had already whistled offside
-('16) another breakthrough for Madagascar, outnumbering the defenders but again offside stops them
-('17) on the other side Tunisia again with a half chance
this match looks like it will see goals for sure
-('19) Tunisia: free kick from the right hand side and a header from a dangerous position across the bar
-('25) after another error in the Madagascar build up, Ali Zitouni has a solorun inside the penalty area and his shot goes by the goalpost by about 2 centimeters
up to here Tunisia has 67% ball possession. This is because Madagascar tries to play the ball quickly into (counter attack) but often loses balls
-('27) another one of the inumerous Tunisian distance shots missing the goal. Though they are not on target they look dangerous
-('28) this time it is a Tunisian header going wide. Tunisia too often has opportunities by players not marked tight enough
-(31) Tunisia: this time it is #14 Chihi who's drop kick frpom 12 meters goes high across the bar
Tunisia uses offside as weapon at the rare occasions Madagascar comes through
-('38)Tunisia: Hassan Gabsi who already has the yellow card stops a Madagascar attack by a foul. Firrst it looks like the referee lets him go with a severe warning but then something must have happened as he receives the (2nd yellow and ?) red card with some delay. It is 10 Tunisians agains 11 from Madagascar now.
Tunisia has many free kicks and corners from the right hand side. corners are now 0-1
-('45) another scare for Madagascar when Tunisia threatens with several crosses played close to the goal. They seem to have spotted the keeper as a week point. But although he sometimes looks unconventional he has made no costly mistakes yet
-('injury time) Zoubeir Baya with a superb backheel trick goal after crosses from the right and the left brought the Madagascar defence into disorder.- 1:0
-('injury time) Kanzari free kick saved

halftime 1:0
Tough luck for Madagascar: Just when it looked like they could start the second half with a valuable 0:0 and a man more they conceded the goal. 67% ball possession and well constructed attacks but Tunisia lacked players who just stay cool and score. Madagascar looked vulnurable in defence and losing too many balls in their fast counter attempts. Apart from this they have surprised occasionally and might have had a chance to steal a point. Now, after the late goal, they face a difficult uphill task in the second half while Tunisians will try to decide the match early when they come out.

2nd half
-('47) As expected Tunisians start attacking and create a few half chances right away. They seek to decide the match early so the man less will have no effect
The Madagascar game is also stopped a lot of times by the interpretation of the offside rule by the linesmen. They also stop game when players are in a 'passive' offside position.
Tunisia still looks the superior team. Madagascar lacks confidence in the opening minutes of the second half.
-('57) Madagascar: Suddenly a 25 meter rocket hits the crossbar and bounces down onto the ground in front of the goal. El Ouaer would have had no chance.
-('59) Tunisian keeper El Ouaer saves a free kick from almost 30 meters that had taken a problematic bounce in front of him
The matchs has become worse, some Tunisians look tired, especially Zitouni
-('71) a great looking attack, but Madagascar is stopped in the last moment by Tunisian defenders and El Ouaer
-('73) a number of controversial offside decisions run against Madagascar
-('74) another brilliant attack by Madagascar plays #13 free again, now he has not been offside and is alone against El Ouaer but the Tunsian keeper deflects his shot for a corner. This has been the clearest opportunity of the match so far.
Tunisia should make their defence stronger now and they seem to do
-('80) Ali Zitouni on a fast break but from a difficult angle his shot goes wide at the far post

final result 1:0
Tunisia disappointed in finishing and Madagascar almost profited. But from the same crossbar from which Bayas trick shot bounced into the goal, the best Madagascar opportunity was denied success.
