World Cup 2002 - African qualification - match report
Morocco - Algeria   July 9 2000 GMT
Before the match:
While Algeria can not be counted as a strong enough contender for first place, they might be still able to take away a number of points from the three favorites Egypt, Morocco, and Senegal. Morocco had a disappointing start and their reshuffled national team has disappointed several times now. Originally the top seat of the group the outcome is completely open now. In this match they are favourites anyway.
1st half:
Morocco in green, Algeria in white
The match is quite fast but not good looking in the first 15 minutes
-('16) a promising counter attack by Algeria is stopped in the last moment by a Morocco defender
The Tunisian referees are keen to avoid any problems between the players right from the start
-('26)('27) Morocco creates two half chances and gathers some momentum
-('36) Morocco in attack, only Algerian #19 luring in midfield - a tough challenge by an Algerian defender, referee says no foul,  #10 (12?) wins the ball which comes out of the penalty area and makes a quick long pass, #19 is much quicker than the defender marking him, he escapes with the ball and scores - 0:1
-('40) a nice looking attack by Morocco but the eventual shot is too weak for the Algerian keeper
-('44) good opportunity for Chiba, but a defender obstructs his attempt, no foul says the referee - on the counter attack Algeria looks dangerous again
-('injury time) Algeria: #10 tests the Morocco keeper with a surprise shot from half right, 20 meters distance
halftime 0:1
a match with good tempo, a lot of challenges but not much class in most of the first half. The goal stood out and improved the match.
2nd half:
-('51) free kick from the right hand side by Chippo and a Camacho header makes it 1:1
-('53) the Algerian defence in confusion and Morocco with momentum: a defender has to clear the ball off the line
-('56) next scare for Algeria but Camacho misses a cross in good position
Morocco is obviously pushed up by the goal, the match is much more exciting now even though there are no clear goal scenes in the following minutes
-('71) Camacho with another Bierhoff-style header, this time he misses the goal close
-('75) Morocco: a quick attack along the left wing a ball against the run of play and Camacho only needs to put the ball into the wide open goal - 2:1
-('81) Algeria trying to attack but not more than an unprecise distance shot
Morocco more dangerous
-('85) Algeria trying with the head but again unsuccessful
Algeria is trying in the last minutes but can not get a clearcut chance. Morocco with counter attacks and Camacho can only be prevented from breaking through by a foul
final result 2:1
By a strong second half Morocco is back in the race for the World Cup. This match will boost their confidence which had been shaken in the recent past. Algeria did not have the luck today but did not work out enough opportunities to complain. Both teams with a good attitude in a match with good tempo. The Tunisian referee did very well in preventing the match from tensions. Man of the match has been Camacho (Hadda) because of his great second half, not only the goals. Eventually the match had been turned by a set piece situation. From then on the momentum shift brought a different looking Morocco side.
