World Cup 2002 - African qualification - match report
Algeria - Egypt   Jul 21 1500 GMT
Before the match
detailed preview
contains words and comments on the confusions before the matches because of the shift of dates and times

1st half
- Algeria in green, Egypt in white socks, white shorts, and red shirts
-('1) a quick first attack by Algeria
-('3) objects are flying onto the pitch, the match is interrupted for a minute
-('5) Algerian counter, coolly stopped by Ramzy
-('5) more objects are flying on the pitch, the referee wants the organizers to take measures
-('8) Egypt: free kick from half right into the wall
-('13) free kick Egypt 25 meters central to the goal- a sharp low shot by Ahmed Hossam, a bad save by the keeper who lets the ball bounce in front of three attackers, the second attempt is against the body of the keeper, the ball bounces toa player  who manages to shoot from 3 meters over the empty goal - a huge huge opportunity
-Egypt start dominating against a modest Algerian side who seek counter opportunities
-('17) header for Algeria after corner, wide but not far
-('20) An Algerian cross becomes dangerous but yet the Egyptian defence can gain control
-('27) a hole in the Egyptian defence but the through ball is unprecise
-it is a quite fast match, few stoppages (considering the climate)
-('30) free kick for Algeria, it is played indirectly and Nader saves against a sharp shot from close range, the ball goes high into the air and bounces on the bar and for a corner - which brings the next dangerous situation
-('34) another dangerous Algerian corner, yet the kicks are better than the Egyprtian ones
-Egyptians look more nervous than in the beginning
-('37) fine Egyptian attack and a diving header by Ahmed Hossam but wide
-('40) this time it is an Egyptian counter and Ahmed Hossam fires immediately, the keeper saves it but lets it bounce for a corner.
-('42) Ahmed Hossan with another long range low shot. This time he does not hit the ball properly and it is no problem for the keeper to hold.
-('injury time) long range attempt by Tarek El Said? but meters across the bar

halftime 0:0
Algeria do not have their best players but are well enough organised against an anxious Egyptian side who missed a very important opportunity in the 13th minute

situation at halftime
-at the moment: Senegal is in front of the group, but Egypt need to win anyway because otherwise they are behind Morocco. Goal difference is only a factor from a Senegalese 4:0 on as Senegal have to win by three goals more than Egypt.

2nd half:
-('46) Algeria come out a bit sleepy and almost a good opportunity for Egypt
-('56) Algerian 25 meter rocket hits the crossbar, might have touched the fingertips of Nader in Egyptian goal
-this Algerian side plays quite ambitious while Egypt do not look too confident
-('60) Egypt: a long ball into the penalty area, a player falls - referee says penalty, the Algerians are furious
-('61) Ahmed Hossam converts the penalty - 0:1
-('62) still discussions, objects are flying on the pitch, the match is interrupted
-Egypt now leads the group by a half goal
-('70) the match is still interrupted although it seems all quiet now
-('75) the match is still interrupted
-('76) the match restarts and will turn back the clock by the 15 minutes gone by to ('61)
-('62) Algeria are dangerous immediately
-Fadiga scores for Senegal, who now lead by a half goal
-('66) Sabry and a second player (#15) come in for Egypt
-('67) a very fast Algerian counter, a player (#9) through on the right hand side, the Egyptian defender wants to avoid a penalty, the ball is centzered where a player is free (Saifi?) and scores easily - 1:1
-Moussa N'Daye scores for Senegal, within one minute the momentum has shifted completely
-('75) an Egyptian corner which shows the psychological problem: normally they have some special patterns, now they just try to kick it in fast - of course it is unprecise and easily defended
-(''77) Saifi plays a brilliant match, since the substitutions he is more in midfield
-('77) Algeria almost with a good opportunity but the striker hits the air instead of  the ball
-('81) Saifi free kick across the bar
-('83) Algerian counter and great save by Nader against a 10 meter shot
-('84) Algerian defender slips and Ahmed Hossam is alone in front of the goal, 12 meters, but he tries to fire with all desperation and the ball goes wide
-Egypt need 3 goals!
-('88) nerves are a factor - Egyptian combinations do not work out, are unprecise
-('89) Egypt: a cross is alittle too high for the attackers
-('90) Algeria: long range attempt far wide
-('injury time) after 2 minutes it is over

final score 1:1, Senegal have qualified for Korea/Japan 2002
Psychology has played a big factor as the confidence, a team like Egypt needs was early shaken by a huge 13th minute miss and a 3:0 halftime news from the parallel match at Windhoek.
In the same time Senegal have to thank a very disciplined and ambitious Algerian squad, mainly from local clubs, who without any pressure delivered a very good match out of a defensive counter position.
They should little signs from a possible lack of form because of the summer break but the match was helped too by an additional 15 minutes halt and recovery after the Egyptian penalty.
