World Cup 2002 - African qualification - match report
Libya - Angola  Jun 29 Tripoli 1600 GMT
Before:
Angola has not entirely convinced in the race for a place at the Nations Cup qualifiers and it will be a big surprise if they can catch the 'Lions Indomitables' (Cameroon, Indomitable Lions) in the race for a place at Korea/Japan 2002. But they can try to put some pressure on Cameroon by winning at Libya today and make Cameroon need to win a match themselves.

1st half:
-In front of a small crowd Libya in black shorts and black and green shirts, Angola in black shorts and red shirts with golden numbers
-the match starts as a fluent but not very fast match with only very few fouls and referee interruptions
-both teams with attacking attempts but half chances only - Angola does not benefit from a few temporary holes in the Libyan defence and Libya construct a few nice attacks but fail to finish them dangerously
-('29) the most dangerous attack by Angola yet and a good save by the Libyan keeper against a volley from 18 meters
-('32) a sharp long range attempt by Libya misses only by a half meter
-('35) Libyans have the Angolan defence in disorder and #11 takes the time to target accurately into the far corner from 14 meters - 1:0
-('37) a second goal Libyan by #9 is whistled back for offside - didn't really look so, a close call
-('39) dangerous Angolan freekick situation - the attempt gets deflected for a corner. This one gets the defence into troubles: the Libyans need some attempts before they can clear
-('41) Angola with another threatening situation, a defenders leg is in between once more

2nd half:
-('47) A Libyan defender stops the ball for his beaten goalkeeper before it crosses the line
-('49) the wall stops an Angolan free kick, the insuing corner sees an unchallenged header which goes across the bar
-Angola now far more aggressive, attacking the hosts during build up
-('55) more pressure by Angola, Libyan defenders are yet successful but the match has become more intense, a growing number of fouls and interruptions
-('62) Angola: a free kick cross from the right hand side, the Libyans are badly positioned and a direct low shot by a striker. It is a little too soft and the Libyan keeper can make a fine save to deny the goal
-the match is all Angola now, the well known Libyan counter game today does not work
-('70) Angola: dangerous deflected cross, the keeper saves for one of the inumerous corners for the guests
-('73) Angola: header far across the bar
-('81) Angola: seldom seen but absolutely correct indirect free kick for Angola inside the penalty area, distance about 14 meters: it gets blocked by the wall, the second attempt is very dangerous and misses the target only by about half a meter
-('84) Libyans become dangerous for once
-Angolans keep attacking, they fight for their chance
-('88) Angola: free kick cross from the left and #7 volleys it against the goalpost
-('89) an Angolan attacker, free in front of the goal only hits the air, the ball passes by
-('90) another great chance for Angola after a free kick cross from the right, it is unclear whether offsides
-there should be a long injury time to be added
-('injury time) Libya do not achieve to play out a good counter situation
-('injury time) cross into the middle and penalty for Angola for what might have been holding
-('injury time) #4 converts by a low shot into the right corner - no chance for the keeper who has decided for the other- 1:1
final score 1:1
Cameroon now need only one more point to qualify
