Mali 2002 - The African Cup Of Nations XXIII
The Qualification

below:
1) who are the hosts, how is the qualification played
2) the qualification for Mali 2002: all groups and matches

The next African Cup Of Nations will take place at Mali.
The poor West African state will try to establish a similar enterprise like the successful adventure of neighbour Burkina Faso 1998.
The national team in the past has shown themselves sporadically at the top of African Football. They finished second in 1982. In 1994 they finished fourth.
Their youth teams caught a lot of attention recently. The senior side has been just a bit unlucky in qualifying for ANC 2000 and had a tough draw in the preliminary knock out round for World Cup 2002 qualifiers which saw them eventually eliminated by Libya.
Most of the state is desert but also the Niger is squaring through the south. It has no access to the sea.

The Qualification for Mali 2002
Cameroon (title holders) and Mali (hosts) are automatically qualified
Seven groups with 4 teams each will determine the 14 nations which will join the hosts and the title holders.
Before there was a preliminary knock-out round to make 28 out of the 49 who entered the competition:
Mali 2002 - the qualification: the preliminary knock-out round matches

Group 1
A- Nigeria, B- Namibia, C- Zambia, D- Madagascar
Despite a recent lack of form it should be no problem for Nigeria to reach one of the two top places as it can be expected that the three competitors will take points off each other. More a problem could become internal discussions which might follow possible lost points and which might reflect back un the Nigerian World Cup qualifiers which are looking much more difficult.
Struggling Zambia meanwhile will have to focus concentration because the difficult away matches at Madagascar and against the recently strong Namibians could set up a closer race for the second spot.

Group 2
A- Liberia, B- Mauritius, C- Congo, D- S. Africa
A very interesting group: Liberia and Congo are both quite well playing teams, regularly on the verge of qualification and Mauritius has been a decent team, especially uncomfortable at home. South Africa had problems there before. But South Africa should be a too solid team to fail, the race for second place seems wide open with Liberia and Congo the most likely candidates.

Group 3
A- Kenya, B- Tunisia, C- Gabon, D- Morocco
Though Kenya will make another of their attempts to revive East African football and Gabon might win some home matches, Morocco and especially Tunisia seem too far above them in a group that does not promise much exciting news.

Group 4
A- Algeria, B-Burkina Faso, C- Burundi, D- Angola
This is a rather exciting group though no recent 'big' names are among the four. Even Burundi might have a chance in this constellation. The other three are quite equally strong and it might be an interesting competition.

Group 5
A- Uganda, B- Guinea, C- Senegal, D- Togo
This is another quite interesting group. There is not too much difference between Senegal, Guinea, and Togo, especially when considered that Senegal and Guinea will focus on World Cup qualifiers in a parallel competition. Togo is involved in that, too, but unlike the other two should have no chance there. Meanwhile Uganda will do everything to put their name back on the map. But their biggest deficit is their weakness in away matches.
--> Guinea has been disqualified from the competition after being banned from all international competitions by FIFA after a government interference into the Football Association affairs which is not allowed after FIFA rules.
(Because of some contradictory reports one has to be a little careful about the finality of this decision).
A relief for Senegal and a blow for Uganda who had been in a hopeful position to revive East African football. Now suddenly struggeling Senegal was able to clinch qualification by a simple victory in the direct encounter on March 24/25.

Sep 1-3, 2000
Uganda - Guinea  result 3:1, nullified

Group 6
A- Zimbabwe, B- RD Congo, C- Lesotho, D- Ghana
Ghana is clearly fancied here. RD Congo have their domestic problems and Zimbabwe looks inconsistent. But somebody will have to seize the second spot. Will it be Zimbabwe? And what role will Cosafa Cup giantkillers Lesotho play, real football minnows?

Sep 1-3, 2000
Zimbabwe - RD Congo 3:2
Lesotho - Ghana 3:3
Oct 6-8, 2000

Group 7
A- Egypt, B- Côte d'Ivoire, C- Libya, D- Sudan
This is a real hot group. From paperform it is Egypt and Côte d'Ivoire but the story has some tricky turns in reserve. There are the ambitious Libyans who will put up enormous means to qualify. There are the elegant Sudan players which only lack some modern style football ingredients but have impressed in home matches recently. There might be some Ivorian inconsistency as the race for World Cup qualification might interfear and some people might become nervous.
But much more of that: there is the old tough Libya Egypt rivalry.
And to add even more derby flair: Egypt and Sudan are neighbours as well as Sudan and Libya are. Apart from all political implications those are big local matches with a lot in them and very uneasy for Egypt as their neighbours will put everything into them.

Sep 1-3, 2000
Egypt - Côte d'Ivoire 1:0
Libya - Sudan 1:0
Oct 6-8, 2000/Nov 19, 2000
Côte d'Ivoire - Libya 2:1
