It has
been the same coach, Congolese Watunda Iyolo, who already had been responsible
for the positive 1998 campaign and 2002 was not much different.
The players found
each other quite quickly for an attractive not too complicated attacking
game and were unlucky that star striker Shabani Nonda had to travel home
twice for treatment of fever and so could not continue his promising cooperation
with dangerous partner LuaLua in the knockout stage.
Here it became visible
that there is still a gap between the Congolese and the African World Cup
teams like Cameroon and Senegal who both were able to shut down the Congolese
attacks quite well.
Anyway DR Congo left
a very good impression for their fans at home who needed a lift so badly.
Even though one might argue that the Congolese only scored in one of the
four matches and were losing nerves facing defeat against Senegal. |
