Cameroon
became the first team to defend their title since 1965, a time when only
6 teams played at the final of the Nations Cup.
Cameroon became one
of the most convincing winners in Nations Cup history without a goal conceded.
But Cameroon became also the first team to win the Nations Cup twice on
penalties, twice in a row.
After having been more
than convincing, the Indomitable Lions faced even strong opponents in the
final which, like the semi-final, they had to play without their number
one attacker Patrick Mboma.
Until the final they
had been dominating in one to one challenges, had been dictating and switching
the pace of matches and applying a perfect punctual pressing in doses well
suited for weather and pitches. And if an opponent had achieved to find
a way to the goal of the lions like the Ivorians did in the second group
match, then there was goalkeeper Alioum, one of the best if not the best
of the tournament.
The final was eventuall
different, a clash of titans, which still saw the Lions with a little advantage
and lucky winners in penalty shoot out in the end. |
