GROUP 7, week3:
Jan 14 2001 1605 GMT Egypt
- Libya 4:0
before:
Once a match with many political
implications this match does not seem to have made much noise in advance.
Libya had to wait a long time of UN sanctions to renew their neighbour
rivalry. Today it seems all to be about football and here the two teams
are on two different levels. While Egypt, who have gone back to an idea
of continuity by going back to another term of coach Gohary, their 1990
World Cup and 1998 African Cup coach. He had been fired after an embarrassing
loss against Saudi Arabia at the insuing Confederations Cup.
Libya, a little populated
country, have a talented team who have chances to qualify on the expense
of the much more fancied Côte d'Ivoire, where football suffers from
the destructive inner conflicts.
1st half:
-('3) Egypt begins running
over the Libyan defence and has a good scene with a distance shot after
a corner
-('6) The Egyptian defence
take it too easy and allow a long ball between two defenders and a huge
opportunity for Libyan #11 who chips over the bar. This could have been
a goal.
-('15) Libyan defence does
not look too solid at set pieces and a corner finds Ramzy who'header gets
blocked from crossing the line by a defender
-It is a fast match.
Egypt with heavy pressure and Libya with fast balls into attack for counter
attempts
-('28) a corner and the
twin brother of Hossam Hassan, Ibrahim Hassan reches the ball before the
keeper and gives it the head touch into the goal - 1:0
-('45) 20 meter shot by
Libyan #13 fails only by a half meter
halftime 1:0
Libyas strategie of fast
counter attacks has one disatvantage: The ball comes back fast, too. So
Egypt have mounted a lot of pressure on the Libyan defence, resulting in
corners, resulting in the goal. At the moment it seems Egypt are marching
to Mali easily. But they need a second goal and concentrate in defence.
Libya have already demonstrated they are able to score.
2nd half:
-('46) another corner,
defended and a brilliant long range chip by Ahmed Hassan (who is not a
mysterious third twin) into the triangle - 2:0
-('62) it is again Ahmed
Hassan who scores by a direct shot from inside the penalty area after a
cross from the other (right hand) side - 3:0
-('68) The Libyan keepeer
trying to rescue, makes a foul on Sabry who converts the penalty himself
- 4:0
-not much to see from
the Libyan team in the second half
-('87) the Egyptian offside
trap fails and a good opportunity for Libya but no goal
-more half chances for
Egypt
-('89) Egypt: athough ball
on #12 who makes a good move and fires a shot on goal but a great save
by the Libyan keeper. More danger after the insuing corner.
final score 4:0
An easy victory for Egypt
who seem to stroll into the finals. But the two difficult matches at Libya
and at Côte d'Ivoire are still ahead. But the four goal margin are
another argument here - it will be difficult to stop the Pharaos from travelling
to Mali next year. |
