Togo appear
to be the minnows of their group, but to some extent they could be dangerous.
The small country east to Ghana has been shaken by politically troubled
times. Togolese football has not been focussed upon but like all West African
countries it has its talented players.
Neither clubs nor
National team has won anything meaningful. Togo had reached the Nations
Cup finals once in the 70's and once in the 80's.
1998
Togo qualified for the Nations Cup finals and upset Ghana in the first
round. Anyway they had clearly been not strong enough to advance to the
second round, losing to DR Congo which they will meet again now. 2000
they defeated a lenient Cameroon in the third match and achieved a draw
with Côte d'Ivoire whom both they will play again this time.
The Togolese football
has stabilised through playing in consecutive nations cups although continuity
on the coaching side does not exist here either. In 2000 the German coach
Goeller departed in argument with the federation in the middle of the tournament.
Togo will be no pushovers
and their opponents concentration will determine how close they can get
to a possible second place in the group. |
