Algerias
big football success story has been the 80's. Two world Cup qualifications
and a victory at the 1990 Nations Cup on home soil are also connected with
the name Rabah Madjer, one of the outstanding players at that time.
The same Madjer now
returns as a coach for an Algeria with different perspectives: A civil
war and related troubles have put the country into a crisis and have affected
the Algerian football of the nineties. After the country even disappeared
from the Nations Cup scene, a comeback was made 1996.
Still expectations
had to be reduced although the Algerians perform a sometimes elegantly
flowing passing game. But instabilities in defence and a conspicious deficit
in converting the created chances make them a team that might be able to
beat opponents like Liberia or Mali, if those will show inconsistencies,
but will probably have little chances against the big powers.
While established
names Tasfaout and Dziri are contained in the line up, big names Benarbia
and Saib are missing on the players list.
In attack Rafik Saifi
will support Farid Ghazi and try to prove his good form he has shown with
his French outfit Troyes in the first half of the year.
