Before:
While there has not been
heard much of the Algerian side, Nigeria approach the first game confident
and eager to win a third African title after 1980 and 1994. While the Nigerians
might have to find their rhythm first, their opponents probably will
be able to perform as a unit from the first minute on. But the Algerians
will have to rise to the occasion in attack and defence to convert this
advantage into something countable.

1st half:
-Nigeria in green, Algeria
in white
-('1) after only 50 seconds
Algeria have threatened the Shoronmu goal already twice but overexcited
shooting spoils the first and bigger opportunity
-('6) Nigerians pass the
ball around to get touches and start to establish a passing game
-('7) first yellow card
against Oliseh after a foul
-('9) A fine trick by Okocha
sets up Finidi who's cross creates a half chance for Agali
-('11) dangerous low free
kick by Okocha perfectly saved
-('13) Jay Jay Okocha delights
the crowd with a trick that enables him to set up a cross - which is ineffective
evnetually
-('15) Okocha perfectly
sets up Agali with a through ball but Agalis first touch is too much and
the keeper reaches the ball before him
-Nigeria dominate the
midfield, conquer balls and play through easily
-('20) Algeria: a quite
good looking long range attempt by Kraouche, goes wide
-('21) Algeria: it would
have been a huge opportunity for Tasfaout (who then blew the ball across
the bar), but the ball was ruled out before the back pass which set him
up
-('31) During the last 10
minutes the match has been nice to watch from both sides, but without clearcut
chances
-('33) Okocha tries a surprise
shot but the Algerian keeper well concentrated
-('34) Algeria: Saifi tries
a good shot from close angle, wide
-('42) Algeria: Great run
by Saifi who alone in front of Shoronmu (though on the half left) fires
wide
-('43) Nigeria: Aghahowa
does it much better: although still with a defender between him and the
goal he drills the ball into the first corner from half right, 14 meters
- 0:1
-
halftime 0:1
Two minutes with a perfect
reflection of the Algerian problem: a smart way to keep the match open
despite individual inferiority and to grab the opportunity and play out
a clear cut chance but then waste it, and on the other hand not able to
stop Aghahowa with two defenders.
Nigeria on a good way in
their style of play but not with a concrete defence.
2nd half:
-('46) Kanu comes
on as a substitute
-('48) Kanu with his first
chance from 6 meters but the keeper saves for a corner
-('49) Algeria: golden opportunity
after a Saifi cross #3 is all free but heads the soft cross wide left,
by half a meter. This should have been a goal.
-('53) Okocha ignites the
crowd with his stylish play
-('55) Okocha heads wide
after a sophisticated combination by the Super Eagles
-fine combinations, variable
play by Nigeria - this looks promising, still they have to sort out their
casual defending, unexpected attackers do not get marked sometimes
-('69) Kanu with a fine
dribbling through, but his shot
inaccurate, wide
-('72) Algeria: header after
a free kick cross, but wide
-('74) Nigeria: Kano with
a sharp low 20 meter strike but wide
-('77) great save by the
Algerian keeper against an Oliseh shot after he had been set free by a
great Okocha? play
-('78) Lawal and Babanjida
come in for Okocha and Ayegbeni
-('82) Algerians sleep at
a long free kick cross but Babangida's header is off target
-('85) Babangida storms
down the right wing only to fire the ball well behind the goal instead
of the cross he intended
-('87)('88)a collision between
Udeze and Algerian #7 Belbey has interrupted the match, Belbey looks to
have lost conciousness, some players look scared, he gets carried off,
the match continues
-('90) Contact between West
and Algerian #9 at the edge of the penalty area, the Algerian wants a free
kick or penalty but does not get it
-more scares as the Algerian
player gets carried away with an ambulance
-('Injury time) almost the
second Nigerian goal after an attempted triangle play between Finidi, Babangida,
and Aghahowa but a defender has a leg in between
final score 0:1
Nigeria starting to find
their rhythm. If they continue like this it will take a very big team to
stop them. Despite the vulnerabilities in defence.
