Qualification (knock-out rounds)

African Champions League 2002 1st round
Petro Atletico, Hearts Of Oak eliminated!
Espérance, ASEC Abidjan, Zamalek, Al Ahly, Raja Casablanca, Orlando Pirates qualified

The second leg of the first of two knock out qualification rounds was played this weekend.

The toughest draw for the seeded teams had been handed to 2000 champions Hearts Of Oak Accra (Ghana) who faced the Malian champions Stade Malien ironically coached by a well known former Ghanaian player. The winner was to be rewarded with another difficult match and it will be Stade Malien who after a draw in the first match took a quick 3 goal lead in the return leg.

Most favorites escaped a threatening desaster after thin first leg performances such as Al Ahly from Egypt, Orlando Pirates from South Africa, or Raja Casablanca from Morocco, all of them winners of the trophy during the recent years as had been Hearts Of Oak.
Defenders Al Ahly faced a tricky task against unknown Kenyan champions Osterian Fastac and only won 2:1 thanks to a last minute goal by Khaled Bebo in front of 15,000 disappointed fans at Cairo.
In the return match keeper Hadary backed a unconcpicious Al Ahly performance by a very solid performance against an English style playing Kenyan team..
Outsiders Wallidan from Gambia did not hide at Casablanca and scored a valuable away goal. Raja Casablanca won 2:1 but squandered several good attacking situations. Wallidan who had already staged a surprise in the preliminary knock out round by defeating the Guinean champions seemed to have a good chance for another shock but in the return leg Raja did better to win 3:1.

The other recent trophy winners had less problems. At Tunis Espérance had no difficulties to exploit the inexperience and inferiority of their opponents from Chad to win their first leg match 5:1 and also won the return match 3:1 two weeks later.
Zamalek Cairo, the team of the legendary Egyptian striker Hossam Hassan (former Al Ahly) and midfielder Hazem Emam also had decided the matter in the first leg already.
It seemed a tricky task as well for ASEC Abidjan (against Gabonese FC 105) but the Ivorians provided for a good margin in the first leg as well.

If you wonder about the Nigerian champions: With Enyimba it is another name again who try their luck as Nigerian clubs have never won the competition. From Nigeria there has not emerged a high profile club such as ASEC and Africa Sports from Côte d'ivoire, Hearts Of Oak and Asante Kotoko from Ghana or the leading North African and South African clubs.

(1) Petro Atletico (Angola) - Olympic Emyrne (Madagascar)  1:1, 1:3 a.p.
*after request by Madagascar this match was played in one leg only because of the political situation Antananarivo, Madagascar. The price was payed by last years surprise team and semi finalists Petro Atletico. In one match things are more dependent on luck and the guest team had.
