 before the match
The home team: Raja Club Athletic Casablanca.
The African Champions League winners of 1997 have impressed with their disciplined tactical performance. Out of a strengthened defence they have controlled matches acting out of a deep drawn back formation keeping action in their half of the midfield seeking rare but dangerous counter attacks. They have been keeping goal opportunities rare and thus produced a phenomal minimalism: 4:2 goals in 6 matches, that makes an average of 0.67:0.33 per game. No Champions league team had scored less goals.
They are coached by the Argentinian Oscar Fullone, the same coach who lead ASEC Abidjan to their Champions League triumph one year ago.

 before the match
 The away team: Espérance Tunis.
The club has successfully and systematically built up team and facility infrastructures that have made them leaders of the African club elite with the perspective to stay in that position for a while. Their dream team is a collection of some of the strongest Tunisioan players blended with the best of Africa who do not play in Europe. Among them the Congolesian talent Nsilulu, the Nigerian striker Agoye and the spectacular Nigerian Under20 international Julius Aghahowa.
Espérance is used to dominate their matches, winning 5 of the 6 group encounters with an aggregate score of 15-0, only to lose by one goal at the talent-studded ASEC Abidjan. Altogether this makes an average score of 2.50:0.17.

the match report

The first half saw the expected careful approach of both teams. Espérance trying to avoid the dangerous counter attacks of Raja and Casablanca prevented the usual Tunisian dominance approach.

During the whole match both teams often attacked concentrated the ball positioning player, cutting space and passing lanes and forcing individual actions already in midfield which often ended up in nothing.

The second half saw some more excitement. Espérance attacked in the opening minutes.

'51 - the biggest opportunity of the match: the Raja offside trap failed and Agoye ran alone towards the keeper. But neither he nor Nsilulu in second attempt were able to capitalize
'55 - spectacular Gabsi volley saved by the Marrocain keeper
'62 - dangerous Espérance counter but Badra across the bar from 18m
'66 - controversal situation inside the Tunisian penalty area but the whistle reamins silent
'72 - A Casablanca player provokes another controversial situation but without success

The game now becomes more and more fragmented (individual actions)

''84 - a dangerous ball centered into the Espérance box followed by a counter but Zitouni is stopped
now suddenly some action in front of both goals (2 more scenes) but no must-score situations occur
'extra-time - 3 opportunities for Raja but all wide or saved as Espérance seems to lose concentration. Julius Aghahowa has the last shooting attempt - the match is over

final result: 0:0

return leg: in two weeks time at Tunis
