 before the match
The home team: Raja Club Athletic Casablanca.
The African Champions League winners of 1997 have impressed with their disciplined tactical performance. Out of a strengthened defence they have controlled matches acting out of a deep drawn back formation keeping action in their half of the midfield seeking rare but dangerous counter attacks. They have been keeping goal opportunities rare and thus produced a phenomal minimalism: 3:1 goals in 5 matches, that makes an average of 0.6:0.2 per game.
Or to put in in other words: with less goals scored than any other Champions League team they lead their group.
A draw would be enough for them to reach the final(s).

 before the match
The away team: Nadi Al Ahly Cairo.
The groups favorites had been missing their most prominent player Hossam Hassan, who just had returned from injury for the last minutes of match 5.
The unlucky 0:1 home defeat against Raja has put them now in a must win situation at Casablanca.
At least Hossam Hassan would be in the beginning formation today...

 the first half:

After 2 minutes Raja attacked the Al Ahly goal the first time but from then on it was all Al Ahly for 15 minutes. Casablanca was surprisingly nervous, marking not as perfect as expected and chaotic at Al Ahly corners.

The biggest opportunity Al Ahly had after 16 minutes when a fine comnbination played free an unmarked player 10 meters half left from the goal, but his shot was disappointing and missed wide.

In the following the audience support helped Raja into the game and despite Al Ahly dominance there was only limited threat.

Some kind of déjà vu then when out of the blue after 41 minutes Raja #10 Rada profited from a hole in the Egyptian defence to score from 10 meters distance - 1:0

After a Al Ahly corner another chaos led to the equalizer when a clearing attempt hit Bilal, changed its direction 180° and bounced into the goal - 1:1 (44th)

In injury time Raja #10 Rada tried unsuccessfully to go for a penalty - a 50:50 situation.

halftime 1:1

 the first half:

In the first minutes of the half Raja surprised the Egyptians with some attacking and a dangerous counter attack in the 49th. In the progress Raja was able to keep the ball further away from their own goal than in the first half resulting in a match rare of goal scenes now..

In the 72nd minute an accidental 'own-goal lob attempt' after a Casablanca corner was saved by the Egyptian keeper.

The game became more and more hectic in the second half and a Raja substitute was sent away from the substitute bench.

78th: some disorder in the AL Ahly defence after a corner led to an opportunity for Raja but the resulting shot went across the bar.

80th: a nore rare threat of Al Ahly towards the Marrocain goal.

85th: almost a killing counter-opportunity  for Raja but offside

no surprise that balls were vanished for some seconds.

Last minutes Al Ahly operated exclusively with long balls into the penalty area, but a lot of wrestling was keeping Al Ahly players from profiting from bouncing balls, a difficult game now for the referee who considered it better not to decide anything now.

In the fourth minute of injury time finally an opportunity for Al Ahly but the dangerous situation ended in a shot wide.

final result: 1:1 - Raja Casablanca qualified for finals

final stats: shots 6:9, fouls 21:17, corners 6:7, offsides 1:1, yellow cards 2:1
